The Cwmbwrla Connections Advent Calendar - Day Sixteen

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”

Albert Schweitzer

If you want to go fast, travel alone.

If you want to go far, travel with a friend.

This year, more than most, we’ve been reminded of the value of good friends. When lockdown began to chip away at our morale and we found ourselves cut off from those we loved and the familiar routines that anchored our lives, moments of warmth and generosity were priceless.

One person we could always rely on for those moments was Hywel Trick. No one knows this part of Swansea better, no one tells its stories with greater insight and no one is quicker to step forward and give others his time.

If you want a fun quiz, he’s the ideal quizmaster.

If you want music in your life, he’ll lead the choir.

If you need someone to make you smile, then his good-natured humour will give you a lift.

As an accomplished musician and photographer, Hywel brings colour and vibrancy into our lives. When we were looking for the right image for the cover of “Cwmbwrla, Coronavirus and Community” this Autumn, his wonderful photo of the roundabout was the only choice. The book celebrates the community, and it’s fitting that the cover features a signature photograph by the man who’s the heart and soul of it.

If we listed all the people in Cwmbwrla who owe Hywel a thank you for everything he does for them, you’d be reading it all day, so we’ll just say it on behalf of all of them.

If you want to go fast, travel alone.

If you want to go far, travel with a friend.

If you want to enjoy the journey, make that friend Hywel Trick.

Merry Christmas, mate.
