DECEMBER 23RD - SOMETHING TO WISH FOR. SOMETHING TO HOPE FOR.
What are your hopes for next year?
- To get back to work and use your skills?
- To sit across the table from a friend and laugh at their jokes without worrying about breathing too hard?
- To break the two metre barrier and hold someone in your arms for the hundredth time or the first?
As we come to the end of 2020 it’s fair to say that most of us will be hoping for a more stable year in 2021. But the fact that so many of our ambitions and wishes have been put on hold over the past nine months is no reason for us to abandon them.
In the English language, the word “hope” can sometimes seem a little vague. When people use the phrase “more in hope than expectation” it implies that hoping for something is like longing for an unlikely dream.
In other languages things can be very different. In Hebrew, for example, the word for hope – Tikvah – carries far more weight. Tikvah translates as “expectation”, so when Hebrew speakers talk about hope, they do it with a successful end result in mind. And it’s significant that Tikvah has two meanings. As well as hope it also means a type of rope.
When our Jewish friends speak of “hope”, they’re telling us about a rope that they can hang on to when life is cruel and challenging, and they’re also telling us that they expect things to get better.
That’s not just optimistic. It’s brave and moving, and it’s something we can all learn from.
Why not make 2021 the year when we wish for things in hope and expectation? We made good things happen together this year and we can use that momentum to make more good things happen together next year.
From January 1st onwards, we’re putting 2021 Wish Boxes in selected public places around Cwmbwrla. Write down your wishes for the New Year, call in to St John’s Day Centre in Cae Rowland Street, Christ Well Church in Manselton Road, CK's Supermarket in Pentregethin Road, the Co-op at 460 Llangyfelach Road, Kath’s Korner Kafe in Robert Street, Haystack in Brynhyfryd Square or Coffee & Crumbs in Eaton Road, drop your note in one of the wish boxes and we’ll add it to our Community Wish List to be unveiled in February.
The first step towards achieving something is having the boldness to hope for it. You may wonder if it’s out of reach. You may even wonder if you deserve it. Stop wondering. Give yourself something to wish for and hope for in 2021.
